I agree... Comercial frameworks are usually built with a specific target (the vendor's AS for example). And it's quite common for them to spend time reinventing the wheel instead of interoperating with or extending other frameworks.
[Thompson, Kris]
Good point. Besides that I don't see how anyone could survive.

So the conclusion? Open Source software is getting more and more mature, and getting more and more into business... but the process is slow and rough, as there are not that many courageous people who dare to use it before it appears on the NY Times cover...
[Thompson, Kris]
Your perspective is exactly opposite of mine. Given the volitility of our industry it is hard to trust which vendor to pick because they maybe gone tomorrow. Where as in opensource the community doesn't just go out of buisness and even if it did you still have the source code to work from.... not to mention a possible community.

My concern with the future of frameworks does not come from the commercial world but from all of the other opensource frameworks out there. Yes it is true that the opensource world operates at a lightening speed and that is where the fear comes. One of the joys of opensource is getting the chance to play with the latest in technology (IoC, AOP, XMLC, Velocity, JSTL, etc.) So the concern is with Expresso or with any project commerical or OS is trying to keep up with the others. Maybe Expresso is safe because the "other" frameworks are "playgrounds" while Expresso is "work horse". It's hard to say. You don't hear Expresso mentioned as much as say WebWork or Spring in common blogs however I would bet that Expresso has more implementations and larger community then those.

To summerize. Commerical frameworks hardly make my radar and unless I had a VERY special need and the commerical framework fit it AND the company was stable(how rare that is) then I MIGHT consider it. For more opinions on my view of frameworks visit www.frameworks-boulder.org

Sandra I missed the other parts of this reply, but I would like to know your
views on the answer to your question at the bottom? Does the market become
more accepting of the open source software? In my opinion many open source
frameworks are superior in quality and functionality (not to mention
support!) than many if not most of the commercially available products out
there. I never really thought about it from the market point of view.

A large open source user base is why a commercially friendly open source
framework like Expresso gets tested in more environments commercial
offerings, and evolves more quickly than its commercial counterparts. The
question is compared to commercial architectural framework offerings do you
think Expresso is:

1. less mature?
2. as mature?
3. more mature?

What do you think happens to a market when open source products are more
mature than their commercial counterparts due to the fast evolution of the
sofware with the open source community development process?
