I've worked with code that does basically what you're using.... 
unfortunately, I can't post it because it's NDA code.  However, I want to 
encourage you that it's at least possible.

The only major gotcha that I've seen folks struggle with is that Java 
Applets on Mac OS X don't keep session. [Why, I haven't the foggiest], but 
there is a TechNote somewhere on Apple's site describing the issue and a 
workaround.
