[Opensource] current state of JNDI (I'd like to help)?

I am moving to 4.1 and see that JNDI is in the experimental phase. I NEED
LDAP within the next few weeks for user/permission storage, so I would very
much like to take it beyond experimental. Can I get the details on the
current state of development, design elements, etc?
