[Opensource] SQL 'distinct' query in expresso 4.02?

I want to run a query like:
select distinct client from clients

so I can get only the distinct data from a column without looping through
all of the records. I'm assuming there isn't a way to do this with DBObject?
If not, I remember several issues with running sql queries directly - anyone
have a quick how-to?
