[Opensource] Accessing DB Objects directly

I'm trying to bypass the controller layer in expresso and access DB Objects directly. What are the housekeeping elements that i would need to initialize (right now i just do a ConfigManager.load). Is there anything else... like Session Management etc that i would need to start-up.
