[Opensource] using different table schemas for login and permission information?

I'm looking at using tables for login and permission information so that I
can integrate with other apps. From what I can tell, the preferred way to do
this is to replace DefaultUserInfo and it's associated DBObjects. Is this
correct? Also, can the change be made to the userInfo class handler in
expresso-config.xml instead of actually changing DefaultUserInfo?
