As we prepare for the final release of 4.1, a concern was brought up on
the developers forums that I should like to also bring up here. The
concern is that 4.1 may be perceived as a minor release because of its
.1 numbering. A valid point to be considered.
This release is very obviously a major release upgrade with tons added
in terms of new features and functionality, not just bug fixes and such.
If we go ahead and release it anyway as a 4.1 release it will be
perceived as a minor release which doesn't serve this community nor does
it do credit to all the contributions that has gone into this release.
As such, better later than never, we are proposing that the new release
of Expresso be released as 5.0. This would happen within the next week,
at the time we package up the latest RC release.
This numbering issue will not be repeated since we now have release
guidelines in place that new ea releases are closed to new features
hence shortening the beta testing cycle and resulting in more frequent
releases.
