Philip,
The other possibility is that you have an old JAXP.jar floating around in 
your class path. [or possibily a crimson.jar file].  OR there could be file 
corruption.  But you'll have to believe me that there is no reason why 
Expresso shouldn't be working on your Win2K server.

If all else fails, try downloading the complete version, clear 
CATALINA_HOME, clear the CLASSPATH, cd into the bin directory of the 
complete bundle and try launching it that way.
