Mike,  I really appreciate this summary.  Just a status update.  First off, 
I did find another bug with Security Filters which is fixed in CVS.

Fixed now.  if any fields to retrieve is set, then the object when it is 
retrieved is not cached.  This way people don't lose their flexibility, but 
there's no cache inconsistencies.
